Manchester United player contracts: Club hoping to tie stars to new deals following Jose Mourinho sacking
The likes of Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Ashley Young have deals expiring in 2019, while De Gea and Rashford don’t have long left on their current deals either
Manchester United are confident the club’s biggest players will sign new deals now former manager Jose Mourinho has departed.
There are a number of stars stalling on committing to new deals, while others have contracts expiring next summer.
The likes of Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Ashley Young have deals that expire next summer, while Marcus Rashford and Eric Bailly are out of contract in 2020. Paul Pogba will have two years remaining by the end of the season.
Negotiations with the players appeared to be stalling due to Mourinho’s numerous rifts, notably with Pogba and Shaw.
United recently triggered an option in goalkeeper David De Gea’s contract to extend it by another season, meaning he is tied to Old Trafford until 2020 as he would have been free to talk to foreign clubs considering his original deal expired in 2019.
The club did the same with Anthony Martial’s deal, though his agent is not optimistic about agreeing a new deal. “They’ve already made several offers that do not meet our expectations. We are far from an agreement for the time being,” Philippe Lamboley said.
