Alternative Premier League table after half a season, based on expected goals
This is how stats experts think the Premier League table SHOULD look with half the season gone
Christmas was merrier for some more than others as the Premier League took more twists and turns.
Liverpool are now six points clear at the top of the table after wins over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United, while Manchester City were rocked by defeats to Crystal Palace and Leicester City.
Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur hit 11 goals across their 6-2 triumph over Everton and 5-0 win against Bournemouth, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer won both his first two fixtures as Manchester United boss, beating Cardiff City and Huddersfield.
But how has the weekend’s action changed the alternative Premier League table based on expected goals?

What is expected goals?
Expected goals (xG) is a statistic used to work out how many goals should be scored in a match.
Every single shot is awarded an xG value based on the difficulty of the attempt, with factors including distance from goal, type of shot and number of defenders present affecting the value.
The higher the xG of a particular shot, the more likely a goal should be scored from that shot.
The xG value of every shot in a game is then used to calculate the expected goals in a particular match.
